Dorothea Dix was a reformer in treating the mentally ill. Dix made a major change in jails, poorhouses, and insane asylums. Dix showed others that jails were not safe for the mentally ill and that states should take responsibility for the mentally ill. Jails were filled with cruel inhumane treatment of the prisoners and Dorothea Dix wanted to show others that the mentally ill should not be seen or treated as criminals.
