Cult of Domesticity was an idea of woman, a self-less caregiver of her children, a refuge to their husbands, and that their home was their place of belonging. The woman that would abide by the rules of domesticity had rules to follow: (1) piety- they must have a religion, pray and go to their religious sermons; (2) celibacy/purity- no sex before marriage, (3) submission- woman obey the mans orders, (4) domesticity- life of the home or family. This occurred in 1820's and was opposed by feminism; feminism brought a huge change to society because the woman that wanted change had more liberty of fighting for it then previous centuries.
The Lowell System was the opposite of the Cult of Domesticity. It was housing systems in factories that provided woman shelter, food, education, and care in exchange for cheap labor in the factories. But because they used woman as workers many people saw this as a threat to their traditional gender roles in America. The textile mills were dangerous woman's surrounding in the textile factories were very dangerous because the woman would loose fingers, limbs and sometimes their life due to the poor working conditions. The woman were tired of their long 11 hour work days, low wages, poor working conditions and decided to go on strike twice.
Susan B Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucy Stone were creators of the National Woman Suffrage Asssociation. The National Women Association responded to the division of rights in America, and lead to the 15th Amendment of the United States Constitution.
Susan B. Anthony was a supporter of women rights, temperance, and abolition campaigns. Abolition was always connected to the discard of slavery since they were both minorities. |
